Scouting
St. Michael's Lutheran Church is the chartering organization of three scouting units. These units are an important part of our youth ministry serving the entire community.
Cub Scout Pack 1 serves boys in grades 1 though 5, ages 6-11. Youth are grouped into Dens based on age that meet weekly or semi-weekly. The entire Pack with their families meets once a month so the boys can display what they have learned and enjoy skits, songs, and games. Other activities include weekend camping and overnight stays at varied venues such as historic sites, museums, baseball parks, and zoos; plus the traditional Pinewood Derby model car race, Blue & Gold Banquet, and Summer Camp. The Pack also performs community service such as road clean up and food drives. We also march in parades and visit local retirement/nursing homes for Christmas caroling and fellowship. Although the goal is to develop moral character and a sense of citizenship, the emphasis is on FUN.

Boy Scout Troop 1 consists of boys ages 11 to 18 that are grouped into Patrols of mixed age and experience and meet weekly. Here the goal is to provide opportunities for boys to develop leadership skills, where individuals can advance at their own pace. They plan and run weekly meetings working on a wide variety of scouting skills while advancing in rank and stature; the older boys in leadership roles teaching newer members. In addition to passing on knowledge directly, senior boys set the example of respect and responsibility by living the Scout Oath and Law. Troop 1 is boy-run. Adult leaders provide guidance and support in a variety of roles from Scoutmaster to Committee Member, or simply volunteering to help at a particular event. With an emphasis on the outdoors, regular activities include mountain biking, Klondike Derby, swimming, canoeing, fishing, parades, and of course plenty of camping. The troop has also taken various trips to historic sites near and far. Community service projects include road clean up, the MS Walk, creek sweeps, and helping out at fire company fundraising events.

Venture Crew 1 is open to boys and girls ages 14 to 21. Grown out of scouts in Troop 1 looking for more challenges, this is the newest and smallest unit chartered at St. Michael's but they have had some great experiences. Along with Troop 1 this group has played a major role helping with the MS Walk in Sellersville each spring. They have also participated in hiking, snow tubing, and camping. Since many of the youth members of Crew 1 are college age, their activity schedule is not as regular as the other scout units, but there is a group of eager young recruits preparing to take the reigns. Venture Crews being home to the oldest youth in scouting it is the most dependent on youth leaders, with adults playing an advisory role to ensure outings are safe and appropriate. This unit will always have a dynamic feel as its members change and grow. Stay tuned for updates.
